I'm weary of the hate you get for being a Ruka fan. The whining and petty attacks are so infantile. I wish people would move on and let others enjoy their favorites without crying about it. I love Ruka and understand the complexities of his character. You also have a firm grasp of him that next to no one has. The grey morality of the cast in Utena is what made them so compelling and relatable in many ways. - Love a fellow Ruka fan. ❤

Thank you so much, my dear! Yeah, I just don't get it... I think a lot of it boils down to the male characters being held to a completely different standard. The things I've read and the things people say to me, it boggles the mind. The kiss is made out to absolutely be sexual assault, no matter the context or how Juri is way more upset about him trying to smash her locket and still calls him back when he's about to leave (because she's realised it was merely a ruse and disregards it). Yet Touga acting out his own sexual abuse on Saionji is commonly turned into a fucking joke or is romanticised. And don't get me started on the recent trend of bashing Miki for having a crush on Anthy. Or how they completely forget how when Saionji nearly drowned in the pond, Utena revived him with slaps to his face, but no one slaps an unconscious person to wake them up... Ugh. I just can't deal with the current state of the fandom. I mean, RGU aired the year I graduated high school and I've been a big fan since about a year after (I recall the movie was about to be released in Japan at the time I started watching it). For the longest time, it was mostly just Shiori who got hate and I would be in the minority who defended her, but it was still largely seen as a successor to Dear Brother as a dark, coming-of-age melodrama with queer themes.

I've resolved to not even bother with the discourse any longer, for the sake of my own mental health. There are others, people like you, who appreciate Ruka, and that gives me hope. And I also have the Ruka pov fic I'm working on, which is allowing me to explore exactly what I believe he was thinking and feeling during his arc. It deserves my energy way more than the haters. Again, thank you for your kindness and support. I really appreciate it and hope you read the fic once it's done. (Maybe before I move in late March?)

Ruka and Momo.

They are Shizuka’s best friends in high school.

Ruka is the energetic tomboy of the gang and she has a perpetually filling stash of snacks on the go at all times. She’s very athletic and strong, possessing a natural affinity for sports and physical prowess for battle. She hates math and regularly forgets to do her homework, mainly because she prefers to play videogames in her free time. This prompts regular scolding from Shizuka, though Shizuka is also very giving of her time to help Ruka with her studies so she doesn’t fail her classes. Shizuka met Ruka in the first week of high school when the latter caught the former feeding a biscuit to an ‘invisible being’. Despite being a non-Stand user, Ruka was very laidback about the whole thing and readily accepted that Shizuka had an invisible pet of sorts, even asking to feed it too, much to Shizuka’s pleasant surprise.

Momo is a very beautiful girl, invoking an air of mystery and grace. She’s very into the occults and the practice of reading the stars. Often being asked out by her fellow male peers, she turns them down with a look that suggests she is seeing beyond their corporeal forms into the unknown. She gives the impression of an otherworldly medium connecting the world of the living and the spirits, and indeed she does possess the ability to sense and communicate with beings of the non-physical realm. It is thanks to this ability that she believed Shizuka had nothing to do with the harm inflicted upon the latter’s aggravating bullies (at least not on purpose; Shizuka had no idea what Rick even was and therefore had no control over him). Momo is a non-Stand user but she can sense a Stand’s presence with her mysterious powers. Shizuka became friends with her during middle school.

The three remain best friends for life even when they part ways after high school.

My Crazy Utena Theories #4

That really was Ruka's sword. And someone did polish it while he was hospitalised. Of course, it wasn't Shiori.

Shiori went to Ruka's clearly labelled locker. The sword is identical to the one she draws from his chest for the duel.

Obviously, Ruka was on to all Shiori's bs from the start. He said that just to catch her in a lie later on. I mean, she clearly didn't know him before. She looked surprised to see Juri talking to him and showing him such respect, when Juri's usually just aloof and intimidating. Shiori is jealous of someone else being close to Juri, yet also intrigued by a boy who is so much like Juri. She intends to take Ruka for herself due to her jealousy of anyone else getting Juri's attention, as well as her urge to make Juri jealous, in kind. But, being the bi disaster that she is, Shiori falls for Ruka's charm, playing into his hand. Though I do think he eventually realised Shiori's true feelings for Juri and wanted her to admit it. He was upset that she kept claiming he was the only person she ever loved. Ruka knows he only has a few days and will step over anyone to achieve his goal, yet his goal is truly selfless. He only wants Juri's happiness, whether with Shiori or free of her.

Delving a little deeper, I think we can infer from the flashbacks and inner dialogue that while Shiori was at her other school with her previous beau/boy who liked Juri/purse, Juri progressed in fencing at Ohtori, and Ruka became her sempai and confidant. The two were very close and she probably told him something about her locket, (but likely not the who or what gender. I think Akio told him that in his sleazy Akio way.) while he may have hinted at his own unrequited love to her. Juri said she was only "filling in for him" as head of the fencing club while he was ill. We see from their fighting styles that he taught her all her best moves. Even when she's at Ruka's throat, he's still extremely important to her. She's thinking about him when he's gone/ dead to Ohtori's closed off world of immaturity.

The person who actually kept Ruka's sword polished, awaiting his recovery and return to the school, was Juri herself. I have always thought that. It's what Juri would do.
